Just a few days ago in my post about birthday parties on a budget, one of my first recommendations was to steer clear of characters. For the most part, I do follow this advice. But sometimes a mom just has to do a little something to please her little one. No?
For my son’s 4th birthday, we had a party focused around Lightning McQueen from the Disney movie Cars. The timing was perfect as the sequel was coming out right around his birthday. The stores were full of fun things to add to our theme.
I chose the colors black, white and a splash of red. For the table, I bought a black and white checkered table cloth and then layered a red one on top. The menu was simple, a Cars juice box, Cars graham crackers and Cars fruit snacks were on each plate. We served pizza and carrot sticks to go along with it.
My 4 year old son’s favorite part was the trophy that each child got. We bought the trophies at the party store and filled them with candy. I printed out a label on each trophy that said, “Piston Cup Winner” and then “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Phil 4:13″ The little checkered flags are actually toothpicks and I also bought those at the party store.
Dessert was cupcakes and chocolate covered stop lights (rice crispy treats). For the cupcake toppers, I used Creative Memories scrapbooking software to print out Lightning. Then a little scrapbooking paper for the circles.
We decorated different parts of the house to be different places in the movie. For example, the kitchen was Flo’s Cafe. We also had Ramone’s body art (we put tattoos on the kids).
I made driver’s licenes for each child by simply downloading a picture of them and typing up a cute little license.
The kids loved every activity we did, but the cars were a HUGE hit. We took old banana boxes and painted them to took like various Cars characters. Then we had races up and down the hill. It was so fun to see their expressions.
Shhh…don’t tell….but I think this is my favorite party so far!
Do you have a favorite? I’d love to hear about it!
