Do you ever find yourself growing increasingly annoyed with a behavior only to realize that YOU are to blame for not handling it the first time?
Do you feel like you teach and teach and they just aren’t getting the message?
Nearly every parent has felt that way at least one time or another. The trouble with training children is that it’s hard to be consistent. You’ve probably already figured this out, too. But there is good news. My friend Caroline and her husband have written a fun discipleship program for kids that I have absolutely fallen in love with!
It’s an excellent tool for helping parents become more consistent and intentional in their child-training. Character Badges is flexible, motivating, and biblically based.
Little Character Badges, for ages 3-5, is what I have been using with my youngest, Luke. The forms are more simplified and focus on first-time obedience, saying “yes mom/dad,” kindness, and more. Each month the little guys are working to develop 5-6 character traits. There is also a corresponding chart for disobedience. The beauty of this chart is that consequences are written directly on the chart (chalk one up for consistent parenting-yay!).
Character Badges, for ages 5-12, is what I’ve been using with my older three kids (ages 6,8,10). They LOVE this program. The obedience chart is full of 10 virtues that they are working toward, plus there is room to write in 2 of your own. Like the Little Character Badges, this program comes with a disobedience chart.
This has been effective in helping my children to realize how often they were struggling with certain things. The consequences are pre-determined and written before them. I’m more consistent, so they are more motivated.
Of course, this also makes it much easier to think on your feet, too. No more threats or making up consequences for behavior. It’s right there on the chart!
I love that the creators did not assume the consequences. Parents have the opportunity to tailor it to each child, if they desire.
For use in my home, I tweaked the program a little. I printed out the charts and hung them on the kids’ bedroom doors. Each time I saw evidence of obedience, I marked it on their chart. Most of the time I told them how proud I was while I was marking it. Sometimes, I just secretly put it up there and they would eventually notice and get excited.
Once they got to the end of the row, I rewarded them with a badge. Instead of having them wear the badge as the program suggests, I let the kids display them proudly on their door ALL MONTH!
Each time I presented a new badge everyone would gather around and get excited. It was not only fun to see them growing in obedience, it was fun to see them cheering for each other.
If you’ve read my blog long, you know that I’m a super busy mom. Character badges takes the guess work out of discipling the children and makes it easy for me to consistently help them grow toward Christ. I’m so thankful I found it.
