Her little 8-year-old self stood perplexed in the middle of the seasonal aisle of our favorite store. “Mom,” she belted out (much louder than I was comfortable with) “Why does everyone skip Jesus?”
I really had no idea why she would ask such a question or what on earth she meant. In fact, to be really honest, I was a little afraid she was going to throw down every non-Christian in the store with a fire and brimstone sermon about how important Jesus ought to be in their lives.
Thankfully, she didn’t. Instead she pointed over to the Christmas aisle and said, “Did you notice we skipped Thanksgiving? It seems like just last week the aisle was full of candy and costumes. Now it’s almost Christmas and no one even has time to notice. What happened to Jesus?”
Her comments were convicting. Although we’d always focused on Jesus in the everyday and the special days, she was right. We’d been too busy to notice a lot of things we should have been noticing.
We were too busy to really find the THANKS in thanksgiving.
We were too busy to sing GLORY to the newborn King.
It was true. We had become too busy to find room for Jesus.
That night as her words clung heavily on my heart, I began to really think about what we could do to find Jesus in the busy hustle and bustle of the holiday season. As “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” blasted through the speakers, it dawned on me.
We didn’t really need a new program or idea. We just needed to focus on the true meaning of things. Not that there’s anything wrong with grandma, but let’s be honest. Her run-ins with reindeer aren’t going to do much to grow the faith of my kids.
We didn’t throw out the whole holiday. Instead we focused more intentionally on the beauty that was already there. I got out the old hymn book and looked up the words for some of my favorites. Each night we sang a different carol and talked through the lyrics. We looked up the stories behind them and a precious family tradition was born.
That next year, I put our new tradition into our school day and a book was born that my homeschooling friends and I could always reference. Gloria, a Christmas Hymn Study was something we began looking forward to as early as summer.
But it didn’t stop there. The next year we added Thanksgiving and Easter to the tradition with two new studies: Count Your Blessings and When I Survey. Our tradition has become the most beloved part of the holiday season. Each year we learn something new that we never noticed before. And each year our faith goes deeper.
