“It’s time for our family devotions!” I excitedly yelled through the house in a bit of an over-the-top flare. My kids came running from all directions wondering what was making me so excited about tonight’s family devotion time.
We had fallen into a bit of a slump when it came to our time in God’s Word together. So I tried to think of a way to make the Bible come alive – to get them involved and excited to recount the stories and truths they had been learning in their own quiet time with God. That’s when I remembered that they absolutely love the classic game charades!
Seriously, there have been times in doctors’ waiting rooms that my kids would jump up and start a game of charades with each other. I’m talking a deep love of the game. So it seemed like a great addition to our family devotion time!
I thought Bible charades would be a win-win. We could have a ton of fun and laughter while also thinking on stories and people from the Bible. And the kids would be fully engaged!
How to Play
You play the game exactly like classic charades. Begin by cutting out the cards and placing them in a basket. Then, a player chooses a card from the basket, tells the other players the category, and then acts out their card without talking until the other players guess the correct answer.
I chose to create four categories for Bible charades: people in the Bible, places in the Bible, things in the Bible, and events in the Bible.
If you have younger children, you may have to check to make sure their card is something they can handle. Some of the cards are naturally much harder than others, especially the places.
If you get to something the kids don’t remember from the Bible, you can even do a quick paraphrased teaching (while still keeping it fun!). Bible charades at its finest! You might even want to invite kids up to act out the story while you tell it! My kids love doing that.
Bible charades are great for family time but also work well for your Sunday school class or homeschool co-op! Give it a try and watch kids engage with the Bible in a fun way!
