I’m sure you’ve noticed that digital products like ebooks, eworkbooks, and courses are becoming really popular. It seems like everywhere I look digital products are taking over. And to be honest, I struggle to get excited about that. Digital products can’t be touched or held in your hand. Plus they are hard to organize and easy to lose.
Have you ever struggled with the same feelings? I know you do because I get emails from people every day who wish that I offered a certain product in paperback form instead of digital. While I do have lots of paperbacks offered through Amazon, you might be surprised to learn that the digital offers are always a better deal. Let me tell you why.
Top reasons to go digital when you buy products:
Digital products save you money
This is the reason people created digital products to begin with. Authors can offer their work for less this way because there is no overhead cost of the printing, employees, shipping, etc. This is a great reason to buy digital. Who doesn’t want to save money?
Digital products have multiple uses
This one piggybacks on the saving money because being able to use your digital product multiple times is the most economical option. Let’s say you are a homeschooling mom of 6. If you buy a digital version of a Bible study, you pay one price. If you go paperback, you’ll probably need 6. That’s a pretty significant savings!
Digital products save space
The other big advantage to digital is that it saves space in your home. Let’s face it- no one wants to be on an episode of Hoarders. Having digital products keeps the piles (and dust) at bay. We use so many resources in my home that I simply wouldn’t have the space to keep them if I hadn’t started using digital products.
Digital products are always there
This part may take a little learning, but you can set up iBooks or Kindle reader so you can access your ebooks on your phone, tablet, or computer. This is incredibly helpful for me as I use resources for writing and I want to have them at the exact moment I need them. It’s also helpful for when you go to the doctor and your ten minute appointment turns into 4 hours of waiting.
But I’m keenly aware that digital products have their struggles. I know you are thinking of a few in your head right now. Instead of balking at the purchase of digital products, I’d like to show you some simple ways to tackle the issues and make digital your newest best friend. I promise it won’t hurt. (ha)
How to organize digital products so you’ll actually USE them
Store digital products so you don’t lose them.
There are tons of ways to organize your digital files. The key is to just do something to organize them. If you don’t know where they will go, you’ll never be able to find them when you need them. I’ve made a video sharing how I use Google Drive (free) to organize everything. Even if you’ve never used it before, this video will help!
Print digital products so they are more effective for you.
If you have workbooks, homeschool curriculum, or Bible studies that you are getting in digital form, you will want to print them. Believe it or not, the most economical way to do this is from your home printer. The key is to have a great printer (no, they are not all created equal). As a homeschool mom, this is one of the most important school supplies. You need a printer that prints lots of pages on a single cartridge and has affordable cartridges available.
I’ve had this color printer for about 3 years now (actually I have an older model). I print all the time but only have to replace cartridges every few months. With other printers, I was using one cartridge per month. AND- this printer uses generic cartridges very well. It’s a huge money saver. You can also get a black and white printer that uses toner. This thing prints thousands of sheets on one cartridge. It’s amazing, compact, and will save you tons of money.
If you don’t want to print from home, you can send your digital files to your local office store. They will print and bind the book for you. I would suggest going black and white if you do because color can get expensive very fast.
