The game of SPOONS—>
When I was first introduced to this wild and crazy game I came away with a few battle scars. Despite the scars, it became such a fond memory that most of my friends still talk about late night games of “spoons” from back in the days before we had kids.
Naturally my children have the same affection for the game. I love that it is simple enough for young kids to play and understand. And the materials are almost always available no matter where you are. Makes a perfect game for vacation.
To play, you simply need a deck of cards and enough spoons for one less than the number of players. (So, if you have 5 players, you only need 4 spoons.) The deck is shuffled and four cards are dealt to each player.
The goal of the game is to collect 4 of a kind. You draw from the stack and discard any card you wish: either from your hand or the one you drew. You can never have more than 4 cards at a time in your hand. Your discard stack becomes the next person’s drawing stack and it goes on and on around the table.
The object of the game is to move very fast. The faster the better. When a player gets 4 of a kind, he picks up a spoon from the table. Other players may follow. The last player will be left without a spoon. He then gets a mark against him. The letter “s.”
You keep playing rounds collecting letters for the one without a spoon until someone spells the whole word “spoons.” That person is out. The game can continue without him and with one less spoon.
It’s a wild and crazy mix between musical chairs and the basketball favorite “horse.” Beware, you are sure to get scratched during this game. But it’s so much fun that no one really notices.
If you don’t feel like using a deck of cards and your kitchen spoons, you can buy a formal version of Spoons here.
SPOONS family fun night games—>
I have a very hard time convincing my kids to quit playing spoons. They love it so much! But if you have time, you could play Spoon Frog minute to win it or a simple timed game of seeing how much water you can spoon into a bottle in 1 minute.
Both promise great fun!
Spoon family fun night treats—>
You could go all out and have a mandatory spoon night for dinner. All food must be eaten with a spoon. It’s sure to win lots of laughs. Especially if you serve spaghetti.
This time, we decided to make whipped cream spoons for our chocolate pudding. I simply got a can of whipped cream from the dairy case and sprayed it onto a spoon. Then I topped it with sprinkles and the kids ate it with pudding. You could do jello as well!
