It was April 17, 2010. I watched in disbelief, tears streaming down my face as my husband of 9 years decided family life was not in his plans and walked out the door for good. Although 2 little girls clung to my knees in despair, I had never before felt as alone as I did that day.

I felt lost. Suddenly a life that had been so neatly planned was upside down. I didn’t know WHO I was.

Those coveted words “wife” were no longer mine. It was a tearing that couldn’t be undone. A tearing that will never be healed in quite the same way.

I had built my identity on something that felt so sure but lacked the necessary foundation of truth.

Can you relate? Maybe you’ve also built a life around a “title” like mom, friend, sister, daughter, employee . . . only to find a breaking you could never have imagined. Or maybe there is no breaking, just an emptiness nothing seems to fill.

Identifying yourself based on a role you’ve been given in life isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we must remember that all of life’s roles are temporary. And NONE of them can give us the identity we truly long for—only Christ can do that.

As I live out the calling God has given me as a mother, I’m reminded of how important it is that I meditate on this truth often. I’m also reminded of how important it is to teach my children not to look for the roles that they one day might fill, the circumstances that might be just right, or even the physical appearance that others desire, but to help my kids find their identity in Christ.

Our identity is in Christ alone. In Him, we find true worth, value, security, and safety. May we remind ourselves as we teach our kids to look for identity in NOTHING LESS THAN JESUS.

Scripture for Identity in Christ

There is a lot of truth the Bible tells us about our identity in Christ. And the Holy Spirit often highlights that truth as we combat the lies and the distractions we face throughout the day. I’ve learned to put my identity in Christ foremost—above my roles, above my feelings, above what the world says. Meditating on Scripture is a reminder to look at who Christ says I am and not rely on who the world says I am.

Scriptures for Identity in Christ: My Relationship

• I am a child of God: Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14–15
• I am saved: But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
• I am chosen: Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Colossians 3:12 
• I have eternal life: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
