Best Children’s Audiobooks Your Family Will Love
Are you looking for a way to unplug and engage the minds of your children? Here are our top picks for some of the best children’s audio books and dramas!
Kids love stories. Exciting plots that twist, delight, and entertain will always bring a smile to their faces. But I find that it is getting increasingly more difficult to find wholesome stories for my children to enjoy. Everything in our lives seems so plugged in. I want my kids to experience fantasy and drama the way I did when I was a child. (I bet you do too!) That’s why I’ve created a list of the best children’s audio books our family loves!

I find that audio books and drama CD’s are an absolutely perfect fit for our family. They are an excellent way to create excitement about life and adventure. They recreate and emphasize imagination and creative thinking. (This occupies the kids which can even give me a chance to slip away and have much needed time with God!)
It’s easy to say that audio dramas have been an awesome blessing to our family. We use them during quiet time since no one really naps anymore. We use them on long car trips or even short ones. We’ve even used them while waiting in the doctor’s office.
In fact, we love audio dramas so much that I figured you might, too. Are you looking for a wholesome way to challenge the minds of your children? Would you enjoy a quiet time where no one could move due to the suspense over what will happen next? If so, I think audio dramas are for you!
Best Children’s Audio Books Your Family Will Love
Brinkman Adventures
I love this company. I’ve worked with the owners on multiple occasions. Brinkman Adventures is a family-owned company. In fact, you can’t buy their CD’s anywhere except on their website, but I promise it’s worth the effort. Their CDs are amazingly well done and share the story of one simple homeschooling family that has a heart for missions. Their adventures take them to the jungle, to deep icy waters, and more. I love that Brinkman Adventures strives to set missions in the hearts of children, but there is more. Every episode carefully weaves in practical and loving ways to build relationships, especially with your siblings.
There are two seasons packed with over 10 hours of exciting adventures. Trust me mom, you will find yourself unable to wait for the conclusion, too! (Another reason why I think it’s one of the best children’s audio books – it keeps me engaged!)
Jonathan Park
Jonathan Park is another amazing family-owned company. In fact, their story is such a testimony to God’s greatness, as they have almost gone under twice! Many of you may be familiar with their CD’s already. Their focus is to help children defend creation. They are packed with real scientific facts, real places, and real discoveries that defend creation from a Biblical perspective. The drama will keep you in utter suspense. I have to make sure the kids aren’t listening to this in the same room while I’m working because they are so exciting that I stop working to listen!
Jonathan Park has 9 volumes with over 5 hours of drama on each one. Plus, the long-awaited volume 10 is coming sometime this month. Get Jonathan Park here.

Heirloom Audio
Heirloom Audio strives to bring history to life. They want the kids that listen to live the adventure!
Bill Heid and the Heirloom Audio team travel across the world to “live the adventure” in the same place where our true Christian heroes have walked to capture not only the action, but the essence of these epic stories. Your kids will love these!
Patch the Pirate
We were introduced to Patch the Pirate last year. Ron Hamilton, a.k.a Patch, lost an eye to cancer about 35 years ago. As he would wear his patch around town, children would ask if he was pirate. The idea blossomed into a full-fledged children’s CD that first year and has kept growing ever since. Patch and his crew travel all over the world helping people find God’s love. The CD’s are suspenseful in a light-hearted way, making them excellent for young children. They also contain beautiful and inviting music that my children just can’t get enough of.
Patch the Pirate CD’s are published by Majesty Music, yet another small family-owned company. As of today, there are 35 audio dramas. We have been slowly collecting the treasury sets like this one. Each set contains 4 CD’s with over 4 hours of God’s Word!
Adventures in Odyssey
You’ve probably heard of Adventures in Odyssey. This radio drama has been a beloved pastime for many years and is a ministry of Focus on the Family. This collection of CD’s focuses on teaching children character through story. They have published 58+ CD’s and even have books that children can read, as well. One of the nice things about these CD’s is that they are only half an hour in length, perfect for a short car ride! Our family hasn’t spent as much time listening to these as we have the above mentioned options, but we do love them. You can get a preview by listening to recent episodes on Focus on the Family.
Sugar Creek Gang
The original sugar creek gang was written by Paul Hutchens in 1939 as a children’s book series. It was later recorded as a radio drama of the entire 36-book series. It’s over 72 hours worth of wholesome adventures, gospel truth, and clear discipleship. They even contain nature study, poetry, hymns, and science lessons, all skillfully woven into the fabric of the stories.
Sadly these stories are pretty hard to get. You might find some at your local library. It’s worth checking!

Hero Tales
These audio dramas are the newest to our family. Hero Tales focus on the biographies of our nation’s great leaders, as well as war stories. Who doesn’t love a good war story, right? These audio dramas do not keep a suspenseful pace like many of the others above. However, they are chocked full of history facts and stories that you probably didn’t know, making it a wonderful addition to your library. You’ll enjoy the sound effects that add so much to the story! I also love the challenging vocabulary that is not edited out!
There are 4 CD’s covering George Washington all the way to the Civil War.

Our family enjoyed “Under Drake’s Flag” – find it here: http://www.underdrakesflag.com .
Another great source for stories is “Your Story Hour” http://www.yourstoryhour.org/
I grew up listening to these, and still enjoy them with my little guy.
Moti-Venture (www.moti-venture.com) has some good audio shows too; old-time radio shows from the 40s and 50s. Our family grew up with these shows and listened to them repeatedly!
I was wondering which set would be best for a 5 year old boy. We’re still getting our feet wet with homeschooling and love this idea for quiet time. He has a very active imagination so this sounds like something he’d love.
I would say either Patch the Pirate or Adventures in Odyssey.
My 5 year old girl even gets into the sugar creek gang series she follows as closely as my 9yo boy, they are so exciting! So much adventure usually only a day to 5 days fills one short book! They are on Hoopla w my library.
Lamplighter also has several values-based audio dramas. We have them all!
Oh yes. I recently discovered them. Great stuff!
We love the audio resources you mentioned.Paws and Tales from Insight for Living are a wonderful audio drama series for kids too. There are
three seasons. Another great resource for audio listening is at Character Concepts with Uncle Rick. He has lots of stories from history.
I like http://www.kidscorner.net. They have lots of free episodes and downloads to listen to.
