As I sat on my couch, surrounded by my little and not-so-little kids, I was ready to give up on family Bible studies. My youngest just wanted to color, my oldest was bored, and the ones in between were busy poking each other! I was frustrated and discouraged. Why was this not working? How was I supposed to train up my children and teach them the Word of God when they were distracted and I was upset with them?
Maybe you’ve felt the same way about family Bible studies. You sit down with grand intentions of imparting deep spiritual insight to your kids, but then a bad attitude or vacant stare bursts your bubble. Maybe you share awesome truths for 20–30 minutes, only to have silence greet you when you ask a review question. Maybe a spilled drink cuts you short or a small child tumbling off the couch derails your train of thought. Though these difficulties aren’t impossible to overcome, they are so discouraging when we face them over and over. Why is talking about the Bible with our own kids so hard?
I’m here to tell you family Bible studies that reach the hearts of our kids are possible! But you may need to tweak your strategy as I did.

Tips for Successful Family Bible Studies
Start small and
stay simple.
Family Bible studies aren’t about trying to create “high” church but rather cultivate a personal relationship with our very relational God. Start with small chunks of time and a simple goal of just learning more together. You can add on both time and content from there!
Toss out perfection
and go for progress.
Man looks on the outside, but God looks at the heart. Our effort shows a heart sensitive to God, willing to grow and learn. Strive for 1% better in your family Bible study efforts each day instead of putting things off until it feels perfect because we all know that will never happen!
Focus on corporate
discussion.
It can be frustrating to try to meet the needs of a variety of ages in a family Bible study. This mostly happens when we try to force corporate learning. Someone is either bored or left behind. Instead of focusing on corporate learning, focus on discussion. You’ll love this simple shift.
How to Find a Good Family Bible Study
If you’re looking for a family Bible study that gets to the heart of the matter, you’re in the right place! I started writing Bible studies many years ago because I knew that my kids needed a change of heart . . . one they would ONLY find in God’s Word.
To my surprise, I couldn’t find high-quality devotionals for my kids. Everything was more of a story and didn’t require my kids to even OPEN the Bible, much less read it! So, I dusted off my master’s in curriculum and started creating them myself.
Here’s what’s unique about our Bible studies:
- All studies are written on age-appropriate levels, so your kids can study in a way that they understand but also come together for rich discussion.
- Our goal is to get kids in the Word for themselves, so we only list references in our studies, requiring kids to look up the Bible verses in the translation of your choice.
- All teaching is straight from Scripture and based on a conservative, reformed theology. Our goal is NOT to tell kids what to think about the Bible, but HOW to think about the Bible.

Bible Studies to Help Kids Understand Who They Are Called to Be in Christ
Created
Kids are constantly hearing messages about finding themselves, creating their own purpose, and defining their own worth.
But they need to be pointed back to Scripture and shown that purpose and value begin with their Creator, not themselves. Having a strong foundation for a biblical identity will give them lasting roots in every other area of life. It is so important that kids know they were created in God’s image and for His purpose.
In Created, we lay a biblical foundation for purpose and worth before the world’s messages define those for your kids. By digging into Scripture consistently (and staying age-appropriate), kids can see that purpose and value begin with their Creator, not themselves!
Who Am I
Friendships change. School gets harder. Life gets heavy. If your kids are building their identity on the world around them, they’re standing on shifting sand.
Instead of being taught “you are enough”, kids need to see that their identity is in Christ. It is the only thing that gives them security, confidence, and the ability to love others.
Who Am I reframes belonging as something Christ gives, not something to earn from peers. By looking at specific, scriptural truths about who they are in Christ, they learn their identity doesn’t shift with circumstances. Because a secure identity begins with an unchanging Savior.
Spiritual Fruit
No matter how hard kids might try, they can’t force what only God can grow. This can make them discouraged and frustrated because they’re trying to be “good” through their own effort and continually falling short and failing.
When kids are so filled with the Spirit, sin loses its pull. It’s not through willpower; it’s through fullness. Spiritual Fruit shows how the fruit of the Spirit is produced by the Holy Spirit, not by effort or good intentions. This study helps kids interpret everyday choices through God’s Word by recognizing whether attitudes and actions reflect the flesh or the Spirit, developing a biblical worldview for daily life.
One Another
Growing in Christlike love isn’t easy. Whether it’s forgiving someone, serving others, showing patience, or putting someone else’s needs first, that love takes time to grow.
God’s Word teaches us how to forgive, encourage, and grow in that Christlike love one step at a time. In One Another, your kids will read the Bible for themselves, seeing exactly how to put God’s love into action. From learning how to pray instead of complain to serving even when no one is watching, kids will come away from this study equipped to share the love of Christ for the rest of their lives!
Blessed
The world says you’re blessed if you’re successful, popular, or have more than everyone else and kids absorb those messages through media and peers. But Jesus has something completely different to say about what living a blessed life looks like.

Do you have to buy them individually, or is there a way you can get the whole set?
If so, does it come with a suggested order of study? My husband and I have gone to almost every church in our town (there are literally dozens of them) and we have not been able to find one that feels right for us. The only one we enjoyed going to had no programs for children at all, so if you had children, then you couldn’t go to Sunday school because there wasn’t anywhere to take your children. All the rest felt more like going to a concert than going to church, and one even had a timer in the back of the sanctuary to count down how long the sermon was…
So we have decided to do church at home, and this study set looks like it would be a good place to start with our eleven and eight year old boys.
Kasey, We recommend starting with the Obey study. Our Bible Study Club packs include all the studies needed for each level of student guide (primary, junior, youth, and parent guides). In your case, you would need youth and junior level club packs as well as a parent one if desired. Same for individual studies if you chose to go that route.

We have had some families with older adult children like you mentioned, and sometimes they choose the youth level, while others choose the parent level.
